A new report suggests former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will veer to the left on economic issues in an effort to attract the support of the populist wing of the Democratic Party.
In The New York Times Tuesday, reporter Amy Chozik said the former first lady recently told several of her confidants that “the economy required a ‘toppling’ of the wealthiest one percent.”
During her campaign rollout video, Clinton asserted “the deck is still stacked in favor of those at the top.” A 16-page dossier entitled “Hillary Clinton: A Lifetime Champion of Income Opportunity” was provided to The Times.
The manifesto reportedly shows 40 instances where she has taken comparable positions to left-wing darling Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. The website “Correct The Record,” which purports to back all potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidates, has a page by the same title. Among Clinton’s left-wing positions posted there include:
Chozik noted this supposed shift to the left is not too dissimilar from her 2008 effort. “The top 1 percent of our households hold 22 percent of our nation’s wealth. Enough with corporate welfare. Enough with golden parachutes. And enough with the tax incentives for companies to shift jobs overseas,” Clinton said in June 2007.
“I don’t know why we have this semicollective amnesia about her past positions,” Neera Tanden, a former Clinton operative who is the president of the Center for American Progress, told the paper. “She’s following no one on these issues.”
This news comes in the wake of a recent report showing Clinton’s pay exceeds the top 10 CEOs in the United States, according to one metric.
