Amid stories of the U.S. military prohibiting members from expressing their Christian faith, likely presidential candidate Mike Huckabee expressed his belief that now is not the time for young people considering life in the armed forces to enlist.
In a recent radio interview, Huckabee responded to specific claims by military and legal advocacy groups who have identified a trend of fewer Christians opting to join the service. The surrounding narrative reached a crescendo recently when a Navy chaplain was reprimanded for expressing a biblical view of marriage.
Huckabee addressed this and other anecdotes, noting that the military under Barack Obama “orders its chaplains to put its Bibles away, not to pray in Jesus’ name, not to counsel people on the issues of sexual morality.”
As a result, he concluded that the military as it exists today is not a hospitable environment for men and women of faith. He even went so far as to caution parents against giving their blessing to a child with such an objective.
“When you have this attitude that is more about promoting gay marriage and gay rights in the military than it is about being able to protect religious liberty for those people of faith, it’s going to be hard to find people that are truly devoted people of faith and Christian believes and Orthodox Jews and others,” he predicted.
In the future, however, he said a new president could restore much of what made America’s military the greatest on earth.
“I’d wait a couple of years until we get a new commander-in-chief that will once again believe one nation under God and believe that people of faith should be a vital part of the process of not only governing this country but defending this country,” he concluded.
