A bipartisan deal struck Tuesday by members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee would give Congress the final say in green-lighting a nuclear deal with Iran.
“We have reached an agreement that absolutely keeps the integrity of the process in place,” said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., on Bloomberg TV according to The Hill.
According to the publication, Congress will have a shorter time frame to review a final deal with the Islamic Republic: 52 days instead of 60. The president will have to submit the deal to Congress no later than July 9. The Hill explains it from there:
Congress would have 30 days to review an agreement with Iran and pass a resolution of disapproval. The president would have 12 days to act on that resolution. Congress would then have an additional 10 days to respond to an expected veto.
The senior Democrat on the committee, Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., was also optimistic about the deal. “We’ve reached an agreement and I’m confident that it will carry out the two major purposes of the bill: an orderly way to review the agreements when they’re submitted and the timing… in the event that there’s material breaches,” Cardin said.
In a briefing with reporters Monday, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said he will make every effort to move the deal if given the chance. “If [Corker] is able to get his agreement and get it out of the Senate, it is my intention to bring it to the floor of the House and move it,” McCarthy said.
Even the White House said they would jump on board. “The president would be willing to sign the proposed compromise that is working its way through the committee today,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Tuesday. “We’re going to have to see how this works its way through the process.”
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is expected to vote on the proposal sometime Tuesday, according to The Hill.
