Since the Baltimore riots have subsided, homicides in the city have risen and arrests have fallen, a report says. The police union asserts their officers “are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs.”
According to WJZ, Baltimore’s murder count is up to 38 in May as of Thursday, totaling 111 for 2015. The Associated Press noted it has been the deadliest month for Charm City in 15 years. Its latest victims are 31-year-old Jennifer Jeffrey and her 7-year-old son, Kester Anthony Browne. Both suffered gunshot wounds to the head.
The police union believes criminals are capitalizing on the situation following the civil unrest in the city last month. “Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty,” according to a statement from Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 3.
“People are doing what they want to do now because they feel that police are not going to come right away like they normally come,” Rev. Keith Bailey of the Fulton Heights Community Association told WJZ.
“Arrests have to go up, quick trials have to occur,” added Councilman William “Pete” Welch, a Democrat. “And we have to make an example of these people who are perpetuating the violence.”
When you have your innocence at risk, something different has to be done. And I’m scared — not just the fact that he was struck by bullets, but all those other children who now have fear in their hearts that they can’t walk down the streets or go to school.
Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, tasked with prosecuting the six officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray, received some criticism after she tweeted out that she would be participating in Thursday’s “UniverSoul Circus” in Baltimore.
