Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream released a new flavor this week aimed at combating climate change. Reaction on social media, however, has been frosty.
The Vermont-based company introduced its ‘Save Our Swirled’ flavor Wednesday, featuring raspberry ice cream with marshmallow and raspberry swirls, plus dark and white fudge ice cream cones.
“We’ve advocated for a broad range of causes over the years, and climate change is one we take particularly seriously,” a statement on the company’s website said. “While we’ve been working tirelessly at cleaning up our own act and spreading the word around the world, we recognize that there’s power in numbers and know that our passionate fans hold the greatest potential for positive change.”
The statement also noted that Ben & Jerry’s hopes the 2015 U.N. Climate Summit, which will be held later this year in Paris, will “produce a legally binding agreement to keep global warming in check.”
Our stance on climate change and our ice cream is one in the same: If it’s melted, it’s ruined! Save Our Swirled is more than just our newest ‘swirled-class’ flavor: it’s a climate change message you can’t ignore.
Many on Twitter bemoaned the company’s message, however:
.@benandjerrys I disagree with your personal beliefs, so I think your business should be destroyed! Oh wait…no…that’s libs. #ChikFilA

@benandjerrys Why? WHY?!!? I can usually deal with your far-left wacky politics, but this kills it for me. Never will be purchasing this.

@benandjerrys the climate has been changing for 4.5 billion years. Your ice cream won’t stop it.
