The infighting among GOP presidential primary contenders is officially under way. A super PAC supporting Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul’s candidacy recently released a one-minute ad inspired by over-the-top monster truck rally commercials.
Paid for by America’s Liberty PAC, the video – titled “Sunday. Sunday. Sunday” – initially takes aim at Barack Obama, suggesting Paul “The Rand Man” is prepared to take on Obama “The Email Reader” in “the biggest brawl for liberty of the century.”
At that point, however, Rand’s camp turns the criticism inward to his own party, calling out Obama’s “so-called conservative accomplices,” including “The Capitulating Canadian Ted Cruz.”
The ad also imagines other events that might attract attendees to the imagined pro-Paul event. The GOP criticism generally focuses on the perception that others in the party are willing to allow the federal government to spy on citizens – a recurring concern for the libertarian-leaning Paul.
“Lindsey Graham tries to read your emails while doing donuts in a 1997 Geo Metro,” the ad boasts, “—while it’s on fire!”
The early campaign ad has attracted some media attention, though it has hardly been all positive. Hot Air described the online spot as “pretty low budget and not particularly innovative or clever.”
Writer Jazz Shaw went on to assert that the intraparty criticism contained in the ad is “great news … for the Democrats and the media mavens who support them.”
Shaw was particularly upset with the Cruz representation.
“Tying Cruz to Barack Obama is bad enough,” the article continued, “but playing into the entire neo-birther nonsense and calling Cruz a Canadian is just the kind of dirty mud slinging [sic] that the media loves [sic] to grab hold of … as long as it’s between Republicans.”
