Shortly after her exclusive interview with Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar aired, Fox News Channel host Megyn Kelly began receiving criticism for her perceived defense of the couple. As Western Journalism has reported, the Duggars – stars of the TLC series 19 Kids and Counting – are embroiled in a scandal regarding 27-year-old Josh Duggar’s history of sexual abuse.
Sites like TheWrap compiled quotes from media insiders who disparaged Kelly’s line of questioning during the interview that aired Wednesday evening.
“It seemed to be pretty much about helping the Duggars salvage their brand rather than getting to the bottom of what happened in this family,” said NPR television critic Eric Deggans. “She [Kelly] wasn’t particularly incisive and she didn’t push the Duggars on issues that I think are at the heart of this – why they waited so long to go to law enforcement, why they took all these unofficial avenues to get their children help.”
He asserted that it took 20 minutes for Kelly to ask about the impact of the abuse on the victims, suggesting her actual focus was in defending the couple.
June Cross, a journalism professor at Columbia University Graduate School, echoed Deggans’ sentiment in a statement to TheWrap.
“She was obviously sympathetic to their cause,” she said. “She gave them the sympathetic ear they needed and the platform they were looking for to get their story out.”
Several social media comments were similarly critical, though at least a few Twitter users accused leftist outlets of hypocrisy for ignoring a similar story involving a celebrity on their side of the political aisle.
