The UN Just Did Something Outrageous To Israel, And Ted Cruz Is NOT Letting Them Get Away With It
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wrote UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a letter earlier this week to convey his “outrage” that Israel may be added to the body’s list of nations and terrorist organizations that “commit grave violations against children.”
Cruz notes such a “designation would falsely and shamefully equate Israel with some of the most barbaric terrorist organizations around the world. The decision to add Israel is solely your decision to make and, therefore, is entirely in your power to prevent from taking place.”
“The 2014 report on Children and Armed Conflict listed more than 59 parties including terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram, Taliban, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and Al Qaeda who ‘recruit or use children, kill or maim children, commit rape and other forms of sexual violence against children, or engage in attacks on schools and/or hospitals in situations of armed conflict,’” writes the Texas senator and presidential candidate.
A 22-page, confidential 2015 draft UN report, which was obtained by Reuters on Friday, includes Israel’s Army and the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas as groups that should be included on the so-called “List of Shame.”
The report listed detention, injuries, and deaths to Palestinian children among the Israeli Army’s unlawful acts. As for recruitment of children by Palestinian armed groups, more information is required.
According to Reuters, diplomats stated that the Secretary-General will be finalizing the list, which may be released as soon as early next week. “More than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed in the conflict, while 67 Israeli soldiers and six civilians in Israel were killed. The country report said some 540 children were reportedly killed, 371 of them 12 years old or younger.”
Israel reportedly has lobbied hard not to be included on the list. The nation has consistently represented that it takes extraordinary measures to avoid civilian casualties when conducting operations against terrorists in the Palestinian controlled territories.
Cruz, in his letter, highlights that last November, the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff issued a statement indicating that Israel had gone to “extraordinary lengths” to limit civilian casualties during its operations in Gaza. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) went so far as notifying ahead of time particular buildings would be destroyed.
“The IDF is not interested in creating civilian casualties,” Joint Chiefs Chairman General Martin Dempsey said. “They’re interested in stopping the shooting of rockets and missiles out of the Gaza Strip and into Israel.”
Israeli towns near the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip have repeatedly been the target of missile strikes from Palestinian terrorists.
Cruz writes: “I submit that, should you determine to add more parties to your list, you should focus on those who actually exploit their own children as human shields, indoctrinate and raise their children to glorify violence and martyrdom, and target the children of others to achieve their destructive goals who should receive priority consideration, such as Hamas and Palestine Islamic Jihad.
“There is absolutely no moral equivalence between radical Islamic terrorists, who are motivated by these factors, and Israel, which is justifiably motivated solely by the defense of her people,” he adds.
“Mr. Secretary-General,” Cruz said, “under no circumstances should Israel be added to your list. As the largest contributor to the United Nations, Congress will have no choice but to reassess the United States’ relationship with the United Nations and consider serious consequences if you choose to take this action.”
President Obama, for his part, has hinted that rather than pulling support for the United Nations, he may pull his support for Israel with the international body. In March, shortly after the re-election of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, multiple members of his administration, both in the State Department and the White House, indicated the U.S. may back an imposed two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.
In an interview earlier this week, the president said that “up to this point,” the United States has quashed such efforts at the UN. But he went on to state that Netanyahu is “predisposed” to “think perhaps that peace is naive.” Further, “It’s more difficult for me to say to [the Palestinians and their supporters], ‘Be patient and wait because we have a process here’ — because all they need to do is to point to the statements that have been made saying there is no process.”
The United Nations and President Obama have indicated in the past that any peace process will center on a two-state solution, with Israel returning to its pre-1967 borders. Netanyahu has called this “indefensible.”
