Tim Watson, a Northern California bus driver, is being hailed as a hero. His efforts as a good citizen and his paternal instincts have earned him the title according to Robert Vega, Communications Supervisor with the Milpitas Police.
Watson drives a bus for the Valley Transportation Authority. He was preparing for his route on Friday, when he read a message that a 3-year-old boy had been reported missing from the Milpitas Public Library. Milpitas is about an hour north of San Francisco.
Approximately an hour later, the bus driver spotted a man and child on his bus that matched the description in the message.
The boy appeared to be crying. Watson said: “I saw his teary eye.” Watson knew that he had to contact authorities before the suspect got away with the boy.
Watson devised a plot that would allow him to contact authorities without drawing attention to himself or the suspect. He started asking the passengers about a missing green backpack. He pulled over and pretended to search for the misplaced backpack. While searching, it afforded him the opportunity to call the police.
When the bus pulled into the Fremont BART station, the police were waiting. The police positively identified the suspect as he got off the bus with the child. A police officer had to use force to remove the child from the suspect’s arms. After the child was removed and safely away from the perpetrator, police took the suspect into custody.
Watson, a father of two, became emotional after the ordeal. Speaking about the incident, he stated: “I feel I did what any father would do.”
The suspect was arrested for kidnapping and, according to the latest reports available, remains in police custody.
