The reported feud between Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee doesn’t really exist, according to some political experts watching media reports.
Widespread media reports state that Cruz was blocked from the media and otherwise taking part in a rally organized by Huckabee and Liberty Counsel outside the jail where Kentucky clerk Kim Davis was jailed on contempt of court charges. Liberty Counsel attorney Mat Staver represents Davis.
Davis spent five days in jail after she refused to issue marriage licenses because she felt issuing same-sex marriage licenses, which she would be required to do, violates her Christian faith. She was released on Sept. 8, the day of the rally.
Both Cruz and Huckabee said early on they would both be at the rally to support Davis. Cruz met with Davis first, followed by Huckabee who escorted her and Staver out to the crowd once she was released.
Huckabee spoke on the platform while Cruz did not. However, there are pictures of Cruz giving many interviews to various media outlets at the event. Some political pundits suspect establishment Republicans are forging a division between the two social conservatives out of fear of citizens rallying around the religious freedom issue.
There was a groundswell of support in front of the jail when Davis was released. Thousands attended the rally, and many signed Huckabee’s ‘Free Kim Davis’ petition when the clerk was jailed.
Davis isn’t the only clerk with convictions over same-sex marriage licenses. Other clerks in Kentucky, Texas, Alabama and Florida have also resisted the change. Some clerks are allowing deputies to issue licenses they cannot sign under their religious convictions, while other counties are opting to not issue any marriage licenses at all. In those counties, state constitutions allow the discretionary decision because it does not mandate for magistrate or probate courts to issue marriage licenses–but states they “may” issue them.
