Following a string of racially motivated attacks on members of the law enforcement community, one Florida deputy is recovering from minor injuries sustained during an altercation with a black suspect.
According to WTVT, Polk County Deputy Mike Walsh pursued and pulled over a driver suspected of failure to stop at an intersection. Soon after Walsh approached the driver, Corey Johnson, witnesses say the interaction soon became physical.
Despite suffering from a knee injury, Cooper explained that he did not hesitate to run to the deputy’s aid.
“I wasn’t thinking about my safety,” he added. “I was thinking about helping him. Because the boy was all over top of him straddling him, beating him. And then he took his radio.”
Regardless of Walsh’s occupation or race, Cooper – who is black – said it was easy to find common ground with him.
“I wasn’t going to let him beat that officer,” he said. “Because, hey, he is a man just like I am. He has children. He has a wife. He has a family. I want him to be able to go home to his family like I come home to his family.”
Shortly thereafter, two additional passersby joined in the effort to subdue Johnson.
“I just stopped my truck in the middle of the road,” Antonio Velazquez said of his response to the melee. “I just knew I had to help him because he was in trouble already.”
Walsh suffered a broken thumb and several scrapes in the altercation. Johnson is adding to his lengthy rap sheet with a litany of new charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.
