It’s 9/11, and there will doubtless be plenty of verbiage today regarding the 14th anniversary of something that should have scared America straight – but didn’t.
That morning, a close friend called and woke me out of a really sound sleep. She was hysterical and crying, “America’s under attack! New York is being destroyed!” I spent the first two or three minutes of the conversation assuring her that she was exaggerating things. But she wasn’t.
The first tower had been hit, and I made it to a tv just before the second plane came in. By the end of that day, the two buildings had been destroyed. The Pentagon was really messed up. And a fourth plane that had apparently been headed for DC had gone down in a field in Pennsylvania. Just like my friend, most of the country was in hysterics.
By the end of the day, there remained a smoking ‘ground zero’ and the new, radically remodeled New York City skyline. We were left shocked by the loss of thousands of innocent people in those towers, and the several superhero firefighters, police and city workers who had been faithful unto death. I heard some of the most beautiful and articulately expressed commentaries from all sorts of news people that day. We were, all of us, severely wounded. And we had no clue of the long-range devastation that morning had initiated.
But for me, the two most memorable events of that day, following the vicious felling of those New York buildings: was first, watching the jubilant faces of Muslims, in America and around the world, partying in the streets – celebrating what they believed was the beginning of the destruction of “America the Great Satan!” And, secondly, I vividly remember the news video of a bunch of people standing on the steps of an entrance of the ruined Pentagon. They were all holding hands and tearfully singing “God Bless America.”
Quite honestly, when I saw that tender and heartbroken, impromptu choir of Pentagon personnel singing together, I was deeply touched and somewhat encouraged.
By the next morning, most everyone in front of a camera or microphone was heralding the new catchphrase on so many people’s lips: “NEVER FORGET!” Almost like the “WE CAN DO IT!” spirit that the second world war kindled in America, this unbelievable airstrike on our homeland seemed to be igniting a bold indignation in people of all colors and backgrounds. Suddenly, again, we were at least acting like ‘Americans all.’ I was cautiously optimistic.
But, just as I had feared, it didn’t stick. And we very obviously have forgotten every lesson that day should have taught us.
In hindsight, for much of our relentlessly indulgent, godless and spoiled rotten nation, that momentary burst of prayer, patriotism and resolve ‘9/11’ sparked turned out to be little more than ‘jailhouse religion.’ And when I saw what appeared to be a strong, fresh determination from so many Americans who then seemed adamantly committed to solidarity, I had to ask myself, “how long is this going to last?”
And, today, it only takes a cursory evaluation of current events to answer that question:
Our nation is currently under a different kind of islamic attack, largely invited in by our Allah-loving president. The muslim haters of the ‘Great Satan, America’ are making all sorts of inroads here in our homeland, and insisting – with the full encouragement of certain liberal politicians – that their sharia law be instituted, even taking rein over our established Constitutional law.
Our chief executive (who denies any connection between it and terrorism) spends tens of millions of our yet-to-be-earned dollars on his running entertainment tab. Generally breaking our economy with spending we cannot aford, the goals of Osama bin Laden are being realized. Our efforts at getting to the bottom of Islam’s 9/11-commemorative Benghazi attack has of course taken a backseat to everything from Obama’s campaign fun to his ongoing golf game. America’s racial disharmony is now at an all-time high – again, much thanks to his exacerbation of that delicate problem.
And in declaring that we would ‘NEVER FORGET,’ what exactly were we supposed to remember? Were we only to rehearse and nurture the outrage we had because our enemies had the affront to attack our shores? Were we supposed to remember our unity as Americans (of all colors) who have been forced to deal with the raging racial and class hatred that our president has totally inflamed during his two terms?
I think a MAJOR portion of our ‘remembering 911,’ should be a penitential revival of our commitment to reclaim the good things we’ve abandoned as Americans in the last fourteen years. Why not take Islam-appreciation programs out of our schools? How about insisting that our laws and respect for the right and dignity of women and children be given priority over the evil sharia’s darkness?
While there is still an opportunity, could we rally as Americans in support of the things that have made America strong? In the same spirit as that indignant choir that held hands and sang “God Bless America” on the steps of a shattered America landmark, might we again vow to remain AMERICANS in the face of all that threatens to undue our unique character? Can we all fight to stand apart from and above the wicked culture that insists upon, like a cancer, establishing the laws of its vengeful dark Mohammed?
Can we not do anything, anymore, other than cooperating with the enemy in finding more reasons to HATE America? Through the remembrance of this tragedy and others since, can we begin to revive the failing hearts of those patriots who are yearning to breathe free – before that hope is forever crushed?
In the end, it is a shame that the tragedy of 9/11 only sobered us up for a fleeting moment. As soon as the dust settled and the rubble was cleared away from ground zero, we once again found our remotes, smart phones and game controllers and returned to our contemporary love affair with sloth and ignorance. And instead of electing strong leadership that might help us to remember our vigilance, strengths and precious independence, we now hire only placating babysitters who can ensure that our imagined ‘security’ and pleasures remain seamless.
The real and pricey two hundred-plus year-old investment that had given us our fine life on this continent effectively collapsed in the destruction of that morning. What should have been seen as a final warning to keep us from the total FOOLISHNESS that so many of our countrymen have been promoting over the last decade-and-a-half, turned out to be just a pile of horrific, YouTube video footage and more distraction for armchair conspiracy theorists.
Oh, that we might soon recall and attempt to revive all that we have lost over these years since September 11, 2001! Oh, that we would truly grasp the ominous WISDOM and TRUTH George Washington crystallized in this painfully earned and inspired caution: “Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.”
And the warning of a former, wise District Court Justice for New York State, Billings Learned Hand …
Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women, when it dies there, no constitution, no court can save it.
Americans, rise up, NOW, before it is entirely too late.
