(Before It's News)

As much of the nation spent Friday recalling the painful memories of the most deadly terror attack on U.S. soil, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R.-S.C., made sure to honor those who died in another attack 11 years later.

On Sept. 11, 2012, the anniversary of the 2001 attacks in New York, D.C. and Pennsylvania, Gowdy reminded his fellow legislators that four Americans were brutally killed while stationed at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

“Ambassador Chris Stevens and Sean Smith were diplomats we asked to represent us in a foreign land,” he said. “Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were former Navy Seals who continued to serve even after the uniforms were pressed and put away.”

Gowdy, who leads the House of Representatives’ Benghazi investigation, explained that his intention in that role is apolitical.

He did acknowledge, though, that much of the press has focused on Hillary Clinton’s role. The Democrat presidential candidate served as secretary of state at the time of the attack.

“While much outside attention has been paid to the former secretary,” he said, “this investigation has never been about her and never will be. It is about our four fellow Americans murdered three years ago, and ensuring we provide answers for their families and loved ones.”

As The Washington Examiner noted, House Speaker John Boehner – who appointed Gowdy to his leadership position last year – joined him in remembering the violent event.

“The four Americans who lost their lives in Benghazi at the hands of terrorists three years ago today,” he said, “were serving their country in one of the most dangerous places in the world. We honor their bravery and continue to stand with their families in demanding answers about inadequate security and what happened in the days surrounded the well-coordinated, deadly attack.”
