After gaining significant support early on from his strong rhetoric against illegal immigration, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has since faced criticism for a perceived lack of details backing up his bluster.
He answered that call last month by releasing a five-page immigration plan. This week, he provided some more insight into his presidential plan to deport illegals currently living in the U.S.
Trump spoke to a group of Alabama Republicans Thursday to announce his projected timeline for identifying and deporting the millions of illegals residing in America.
“We have to get them out,” he affirmed. “If we have wonderful cases, they can come back in, but they have to come back in legally.”
When a caller proposed five or ten years as a forecast, Trump explained he expects to get the job done much faster.
“It’s called really good management,” he responded. “It can be done.”
As for the estimated number of illegals in the country, Trump scoffed at the notion that it has remained stagnant in recent years.
“Our country doesn’t even know what the number is,” he said. “It’s been 11 million for years, but they don’t even know what it is. It could be much more than that.”
No matter how many there are, though, he said it is imperative for the next president to take the issue of deportation seriously.
He predicted the process “can take 18 months to two years if properly handled.”
Addressing concerns that his plan is untenable, Trump took another direct shot at his closest current primary rival, Ben Carson.
“It wouldn’t work for him,” he said of the deportation plan, “because he has absolutely no management capabilities.”
