The Ben Carson campaign is not surprised in the GOP’s efforts to attach a fundraising effort to the neurosurgeon’s name. The 2016 Republican presidential candidate is surging in the polls and has a groundswell of support, so it makes sense for the party to capture that popularity for raising donations, according to a Carson campaign official.
“Ben’s name is currently the most powerful name in fundraising,” said Carson spokesman Doug Watts.
However, Watts said the Carson campaign doesn’t appreciate the manner the GOP has initiated its latest campaign. A wing of the Republican National Committee, called the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), sent out an email blast recently that urged people to wish the presidential candidate happy 64th birthday by signing a “petition.” Those signing were required to turn over information, like their name, email, address and zip code.
A Carson fan said he was then directed to a donation page to contribute to the NRSC. There was some concern among those signing the birthday well wishes for Carson that some may not understand the money was going to Republican efforts instead of Carson’s campaign.
While some political candidates work deals with their respective political parties to use their name and image for fundraising efforts, Watts said the GOP did not do that with Carson. That is the problem, he said.
“No heads up, no courtesy notice…nor any deal,” Watts said.
The move by establishment Republicans is ironic in that Carson has been critical of the GOP establishment in his fundraising emails.
“Some say I don’t have the ‘political experience’ to be President, but look where Washington, with a combined 9,000 years of ‘political experience,’ has gotten us. Washington is broken. The politicians broke it,” Carson said in one email
Watts said Carson’s campaign has gone well, even in August when most campaigns hit a dry spell. The campaign has, so far, raised $24 million from 285,000 donors. Figures show that $6 million was raised in August, doubling the amount raised in July. Campaign disclosure reports through the end of June indicate that only Gov. Jeb Bush and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have raised more money during the same time period among candidates filing reports at that time.
The campaign is innovative in ways it is raising money. It is selling ball caps, lithographs of Carson, an abridged version of his book “Gifted Hands, and is using his campaign bus to raise money by listing names of children whose parents pay for it with a $50 donation.
Ben Carson is cool….. but his MANDATORY VACCINATIONS FOR EVERYBODY is gonna be out to get ya!
