Ahmed Mohamed, the Muslim Texas boy who has arguably parlayed his detention for having a clock that looked like a bomb into worldwide celebrity status, was honored as a hero Monday in the city where the Twin Towers once stood.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a proclamation marking “Ahmed Day” as the city’s top political leaders fawned over the boy during an appearance at New York’s City Hall.
New York City Public Advocate Letitia James called him a role model and let him sit in her chair in the council chambers.
“Keep doing what you’re doing,” de Blasio himself told the teen.
The elevation of the boy from a student who ran afoul of school rules to supposedly a symbol of the oppressed has not gone over well with some commentators.
“Here’s the message boys and girls, devise a hoax that looks like a bomb, scare the hell out of everyone in school and you too will become lauded and saluted the world over,” wrote Pamela Geller. “Just one thing, you better be a Muslim because if you aren’t, you’ll be expelled and ruined.”
In summarizing the incident, Geller noted that the boy apparently did not build the clock in question, knowingly brought something to school that looked to any observer like a tangle of wires that could be a bomb, refused to cooperate with authorities, and has a school record chock full of disobedience.
“Everyone is very eager to show off how racist they’re not. Don’t let anyone tell you this is all a hoax. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re a rube and you got played,” wrote blogger Jim Treacher.
“You’re a good person, and you like to read Twitter, and Islamophobia is bad, and Ahmed Mohamed is a downtrodden victim. That’s all you need to know. Anybody who says otherwise is a racist. Them’s the rules,” Treacher wrote.
