Even as the cable network’s criteria threatened to exclude a Republican candidate with proven nationwide support, CNN is prepared to invite a Democrat to join in that party’s first debate despite the fact that he is not yet a candidate.
Joe Biden, who has attracted recent attention as a potential replacement for scandal-plagued front-runner Hillary Clinton, is polling well enough to earn him a spot on the stage Oct. 13 – assuming he actually decides to run for president.

CNN released its criteria, which stipulates that Biden would qualify for the debate as long as he formally announces his candidacy by the date of the Las Vegas debate. Beyond that, any candidate with a polling average of at least one percent may participate.
Biden, who came in third place in a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, is scoring much better than a number of announced Democrat candidates. Despite their relatively modest support, Lincoln Chafee and Jim Webb have been invited to join top-tier candidates Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Reports indicate Martin O’Malley did not score high enough to qualify for a spot in the first debate.
While CNN earned some praise from Biden supporters for its debate criteria, some critics speculated that the network’s motives were likely ledger-related …
