Is a man putting his arm around his girlfriend really a sign of “ownership”?
That’s what famous actress Helen Mirren (pictured above, left) claimed recently in an interview with the Daily Mail’s You magazine.
Here’s her exact quote:
‘It annoys me when I see men with an arm slung round their girlfriend’s shoulders. It’s like ownership. Of course, when you’re young, you want the guy to take your hand and look after you.
‘But when I see girls being leaned on, I want to say, “Tell him to get his damned arm off your shoulder.”’
Mirren, born to an English working-class family, has won four Emmy awards in her career. She also won her first Oscar for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen.
In her interview, she shared the following tidbit concerning modern women:
‘It’s hard to break out of the traditional female roles – the housewife, the girlfriend, the victim.
‘Because often what appears to be a strong character actually isn’t – it’s just a cipher. But when women complain about the paucity of roles for older women, I say put your energies into changing the way we view each other in real life – then the rest will follow.’
She further added:
‘Women are still toddlers in this modern world, trying to find their position in the age of sexual liberation, birth control, education and financial independence.’
This is not the first time Mirren has spoken outlandishly about male-female relations.
In 2011, she stated concerning the lack of female Nobel laureates:
“In my personal experience, wherever there was a force for the positive, for creativity, it was almost always led by women and they are doing it with no recognition and under very difficult circumstances.”
What do you think about Mirren’s comments? When did a normal act of affection (putting your arms around your significant other) become symbolic of male domination?
