The Obama administration announced Thursday that it plans to increase the number of Syrian war refugees admitted into the United States over sixfold during the next fiscal year.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest stated that the U.S. will have admitted approximately 1500 refugees by the end of this fiscal year on Sept. 30. During the next fiscal year, it will “accept at least 10,000 refugees,” he said.
The United Nations has asked the U.S. to take in a much larger number, at least 65,000, which the Obama administration so far has indicated the country does not have the capacity to do. Fourteen Senate Democrats sent a letter to the administration urging officials to meet that threshold.
They wrote: “it is a moral, legal, and national security imperative for the United States to lead by example in addressing the world’s worst refugee crisis of our time by greatly increasing the number of Syrian refugees who are resettled in our country.”
As reported by Western Journalism, four million Syrians have fled their country since the Civil War began. Germany has promised to accept 800,000 this year (and 500,000 per year thereafter), while Great Britain has agreed to allow 20,000 by 2020 and expects 4000 by the end of year.
CNN reports: “Vetting the Syrian refugees has been a problem. The U.S. relies on UN lists of refugees who are deemed safe candidates for resettlement, but the screening process can take between 18 and 24 months and strains the resources of the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Immigration Services.”
“The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has already referred 18,000 cases to the United States for resettlement,” according to the New York Times.
“What we’re trying to do is weed out people who are liars, who are criminals or would-be terrorists,” a senior State Department official told CNN.
“Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Wednesday that the current migration is a ‘disaster of biblical proportions’ that poses an opportunity for terrorist groups such as ISIS to ‘infiltrate operatives among these refugees.’”
Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement Wednesday after meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry regarding the U.S. response to the crisis. In his statement, he urged the administration to enlist the help of Middle Eastern nations in re-settling the refugees and taking all necessary precautions to keep terrorists from coming into the nation with the refugees.
“The United States welcomes more refugees than the rest of the world’s countries combined, and there’s no question that we need to continue to do our part to help with the crisis that is unfolding in the Middle East and Europe. But, the administration also needs to enlist the help of other capable, affluent nations in the Middle East to deal with the crisis in Syria to care for those who are fleeing violence and persecution.
“In addition, before agreeing to accept tens of thousands of Syrian refugees, the Obama administration must prove to the American people that it will take the necessary precautions to ensure that national security is a top priority, especially at a time when ruthless terrorist groups like ISIS are committed to finding ways to enter the United States and harm Americans.”

if the fourteen senators who wrote the letter to the whitehouse are willing to give up their paycheck, and donate the proceeds to more refugees, then it will be applied to those already allowed. the senators can then empty their bank accounts and liquidate their personal assets and donate that for more refugees! Anyone willing to bet that they would RUN from the refugee issue then??
It’s not so easy when the money has to come out of your own pocket is it, senators!
