On the day that Speaker of the House John Boehner announced his pending resignation, not just from the Speaker’s chair but from Congress, a large group of conservatives were meeting in Washington–and one man had the crowd there worked up to a fever pitch with his bold attack on the D.C. establishment.
Though he may be back in the pack of Republican Presidential candidates for the GOP nomination, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee had the crowd at the Values Voter Summit on their feet cheering during his rousing address, so much so that he seemed to take the spotlight away from GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
After news broke at the Summit that Speaker Boehner had announced he was stepping down in October, Huckabee used that news to good effect for a humorous opener, saying that he heard that Boehner decided to resign after a meeting with the pope. Huckabee then wondered aloud if it were possible to arrange a similar meeting for Obama!
But as his speech commenced, he wowed the conservative audience with his direct attack on the establishment, saying, “making a speech is not leadership.”
“I’m angry. Republicans aren’t doing anything different in the majority as they were doing in the minority,” Huckabee thundered.
“I understand what a fight is. But I understand that a fight means that you fight to win, not just fight to fight,” he said.
Huckabee then warned that fighting has to have a purpose. “The easiest thing in the world is to take a can of gasoline and a book of matches and burn the whole thing down. It requires no skill whatsoever. A kid who is 11 years old can do that,” he said, before noting that there had to be a logical end goal.
After reminding his audience that he was not an inside-the-beltway type of politician, Huckabee also noted that making speeches is not leadership.
“I’ve never lived here, I’ve never worked here, I’ve never had a paycheck here,” Huckabee said. “But I do understand that simply making a speech is not leadership and simply proposing a piece of legislation is not leadership. Unless you bring it to the point where it gets signed and implemented, it’s nothing but talk.”
“Leadership means you get the job done. We must begin to get the job done. I’ve heard enough speeches in America. I want some real leadership to change America.”
