CNN put the wants of show business before the needs of the American voters, Bill O’Reilly charged Wednesday night in his analysis of the Republican presidential debate’s format.
“What have we learned?” the Fox News host commented. “It’s all about the show. Not about solving vexing problems.”
“The bear baiting was a little bit too much,” O’Reilly said, making clear his dislike for the Trump-centric nature of the debate.
“The CNN moderators made the debate very personal using Donald Trump’s attacks on other Republicans to frame questions,” he said. “Time after time, Trump said this. How do you respond, Governor Bush? How do you respond Carly Fiorina? Or Rand Paul? Or Ben Carson? That was a waste of time and obviously a strategy to energize ratings.”
“Instead of incisive questioning, we got gotcha,” he said.
Charles Krauthammer, who appeared with O’Reilly, also agreed that the format created more heat among the candidates than enlightenment upon the issues.
“It was throwing meat into the arena. It was like WWE without the entertainment value,” Krauthammer said.
“Trump was up for the challenge, never backing down, but what did we learn?,” O’Reilly asked.
O’Reilly was not alone in excoriating CNN.
“Like a really brutal boxing match between equals, the CNN Republican presidential debate was long and bloody and not terribly conclusive,” wrote Ed Kilgore. “The CNN debate was skewed heavily by a format that began nearly every question with a quote from one candidate about another, and then allowed follow-up by the candidate quoted. This naturally favored the more combative and quote-worthy candidates, and also guaranteed another Trump-heavy debate.”
Krauthammer gave highest marks to Carly Fiorina and Marco Rubio.
