(Before It's News)

Everyone likes a good mystery. Except when it hits close to home. And hits again. And again.

That’s why three villages in Spain are concerned over three mysterious objects that have been discovered near the villages of Mula, Calasparra and Villavieja.

“In the early morning of the day when the first object was found, witnesses said they saw between six and seven balls of fire falling from the sky,” said Maria Jose Gomariz, spokeswoman for Calasparra.

Each object was “a kind of sphere, consisting of a black material, entirely hollow, weighing between 15 and 20 kilos and had a diameter of about 70 centimeters,” the Spanish news site La Verdad reported.

The first one, found in a muddy field, had no footprints around it, suggesting it came from the sky.

The Civil Guard is testing the objects for possible biological, radiological, nuclear or chemical contamination, but so far experts are guessing the objects are some brand of space junk. The area where the objects were found has been quarantined.

“Speculation so far is that the objects may be pressurized gas containers or fuel tanks, but there’s no word on what they were attached to,” wrote Paul Seaburn on MysteriousUniverse.org.

“Furthermore, there’s no explanation for why they survived the fall in such good shape and … the questions everyone … wants answered … why they continue to target the same small area and should residents expect more?”

The mayor of Calaspara is irked by the “lack of information” from the authorities.

“I think it is a more serious issue than it seems, and citizens are concerned about what is happening and deserve an explanation,” Jose Velez said.

Not everyone is quite as serious

Houston, we have a problem,” Spain’s El Pais daily wrote in an editorial, which assumes the balls are space junk.

“Some measures may have been taken to tackle the problem, but we’re far from a solution,” it said. “Not only is it expensive, but it’s also difficult to devise a garbage collection system to go sweep in space.”
