A Florida high school student went to her teacher seeking an answer. What she got, instead was “nastiness.”
Teacher Vadi Velez-Gonzalez has been accused of watching pornography on his cell phone during class, and putting the phone where students could see. As a result, Mulberry High School has put him on administrative leave and he is facing charges.
It began when a student went to ask the teacher a question and saw what the teacher was looking at.
“I went back to my desk and thought, ‘I can’t believe what I saw,’” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the student told him.
“And she looks down and there is this pornography in plain view for the world to see,” Judd said.
“That’s just nastiness,” said student Destiny Potter, who after seeing the phone once decided something had to be done.
Judd said the student then went past the teacher’s desk pretending to throw something in the trash while secretly filming him. She posted what she found.
“It was all over SnapChat,” Potter said. “The video wasn’t playing, but it was paused, and you could see what he was watching.”
Students alerted school staff, who then contacted the police. Investigators said Gonzalez visited gay porn and hookup sites more than 380 times within two weeks, including many times during school hours.
“We believe he knew exactly what he was doing. He was exposing ninth grade children to very nasty pornography,” Judd said.
Gonzalez was charged with four counts of showing obscene material to minors and was immediately placed on administrative leave until the case is concluded.
