The last Republican presidential debate hosted by CNBC drew intense criticism from the candidates involved, leading to a meeting Sunday between many of the campaigns over what can be done in the future to remedy the situation.
At the meeting, the campaigns drew up a three-page letter with a set of conditions that would have to be fulfilled by networks hoping to host feature debates.
It included demands that candidates get at least 30 seconds for an opening and closing statement and that there will be no lighting rounds “because of their frivolous and ‘gotcha’ nature.”
Appearing on Megyn Kelly’s “The Kelly File” Tuesday, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said his campaign would not be signing on to the letter.
However, that did not mean he didn’t have critical words for the last debate — and some advice for the Republican National Committee..
Cruz asked on the show: “Why is it that we have Republican primary debates that are moderated by liberal Democrats?”
He went on to say: “The one rule change that I think the RNC ought to think about is saying that if you have never in your life voted in a Republican Party primary, that you shouldn’t be moderating a Republican primary debate.”
He suggested instead that conservative figures like Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh should be moderating instead.
Kelly was quick to bring up several possible debate moderators she believed were able debate moderators without necessarily voting as Republicans.
Cruz held to his position, stating that liberals should simply not be moderating Republican presidential debates.
What do you think of Cruz saying that liberal Democrats should not be moderating Republican debates?
