The Russian jet shot down over Egypt may have been brought down by a bomb that was planted near one of the plane’s fuel lines and detonated through the use of a timer. An “airport insider” is the likely source of the bomb, Fox News reported.
Fox News Thursday quoted sources as saying that they have uncovered references to a “two-hour timer” in their investigation of the crash. It was unclear if this was from communications among terrorists or from physical evidence.
One theory of the explosion is that terrorists planted the bomb inside the aircraft while it was on the ground in Egypt. The bomb, so the theory goes, was planted around the spot where the plane’s fuel line connects to the engine. In this scenario, the fuel would have burned away any explosive residue. This conforms to evidence uncovered at the scene.
“If proven accurate, if ISIS did put a bomb on this aircraft which I believe to be true, it’s a new chapter with respect to ISIS,” said Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas.
“We always assumed Al Qaeda had this capability but now if ISIS has this capability, the threat to American airlines as well and our homeland, I think is very significant,” he said.
The plane was blown up about 23 minutes into the flight. Fox News reported that investigators are now focused on who had access to the plane in a “90-minute window” before takeoff. Investigators have focused upon ground crews and those with access to the departure lounge at Sharm el-Sheikh, the airport from which the doomed plane took off on Oct. 31.
