Obama’s Newest Executive Action Could Spit In Congress’ Face In A ‘Highly Reckless’ Way
The latest defense policy bill has passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and Barack Obama plans to sign the bill.
The bill bars the transfer of Guantanamo Bay inmates to the United States, a provision the president opposes
However, Obama is not vetoing the bill. It passed by whopping margins in the House (370-58) and the Senate (91-3), rendering such a veto ineffective.
Speculation is rife, though, that Obama may sign an executive order opposing the bill.
According to Fox News, White House press secretary Josh Earnest has indicated twice recently that Obama may use an executive order to bypass Congress.
Earnest stated: “I’m going to protect the ability of the president to use his authority [to] move the country in the direction he believes it should be headed, and particularly when it comes to an issue like…closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay.”
Representative Mike McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, spoke out against a possible Obama executive order on “Fox News Sunday.”
“It’s hard to stop this kind of action. I would hope the American people rise up in numbers so strongly…that [Obama] will decide to back down,” he said.
He also said that the “worst of the worst” detainees could be let into the country.
“You’re going to see a heightened terror alert. It would be highly reckless and irresponsible,” he said.
Obama pledged in his 2008 campaign that he would close down the facility at Guantanamo Bay.
The Pentagon is set to release a report on the pros and cons for three potential US transfer facilities for Guantanamo detainees to sites in South Carolina, Colorado and Kansas.
One of the governors of the states has that could be affect spoke out fiercely about the prospect of Guantanamo detainees coming to her state.
Nikki Haley, governor of South Carolina, stated this summer: “We are absolutely drawing a line that we are not going to allow any terrorist to come into South Carolina. We’re not going to allow that kind of threat.”
