Ted Cruz has spoken highly of Donald Trump in public, recently saying that he would appoint Donald Trump to build a wall with Mexico and as a trade negotiator if there was a Cruz administration.
He stated in an interview on Tuesday:
Oh listen, I like and respect Donald Trump. I continue to like and respect Donald Trump. While other candidates in this race have have gone out of their way to throw rocks at him, to insult him, I have consistently declined to do so and I have no intention of changing that now.
However, according to an audio recording of a recent private fund-raiser provided by an attendee to the New York Times, Cruz may sing a different tune concerning Trump in private than he does in public.
While Cruz reiterated that he likes and respects Donald Trump, as well as Ben Carson, in the recording, he also said that “I don’t believe either one of them is going to be our president.”
He asked, “You look at Paris, you look at San Bernadino, it’s given a seriousness to this race, that people are looking for: Who is prepared to be commander in chief? Who understands the threats we face?”
Cruz then added: ” Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button? Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them.”
The senator was questioned about his remarks following a speech he gave at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.
Cruz said he was “not going to comment on what I may or may not have said at a private fundraiser.”
He then said, ” What I will say this: In the course of a presidential election, the voters are going to make a decision about every candidate. And ultimately the decision is- who has the right judgment- experience and judgment- to serve as commander and chief? And every one who is running is being assessed by the voters under that metric. And that is exactly why we have a democratic election to make that determination.”
Cruz’s questioning of Trump’s judgment to be president has not gone without response from Trump. Trump tweeted earlier today:
Looks like @tedcruz is getting ready to attack. I am leading by so much he must. I hope so, he will fall like all others. Will be easy!

.@tedcruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses, he should bring them out into the open – more fun that way! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 11, 2015
