After hearing an elderly neighbor’s cries for help last week, a Georgia woman and another Good Samaritan arrived with guns in hand and saved the man’s life.
Last Monday, Karen Duncan heard “Help, he is trying to kill me, help me, help me!” coming from her 90-year-old neighbor’s home in Lawrenceville, about an hour northeast of Atlanta.
Another neighbor, Ron Childress, noticed Duncan running towards the home, and realized something was amiss and took off in that direction himself. The former law enforcement officer told Fox 5, “She kind of started running towards the house. I could tell something was wrong and she hit the doorbell in a panic.”
Duncan entered the home first, carrying her purse with her .38 caliber gun inside. “As I got closer I realized that there is this elderly gentleman laying on the ground with a younger man on top of him with a knife,” Duncan recounted. “I see blood and this big old knife.”
The woman ordered the attacker to stop, but he did not listen.
“Finally I said, ‘I’m getting ready to shoot you’ and then he stopped and he looked at me and he tossed the knife away,’” Duncan stated.
Childress, Duncan’s friend, had joined her in the elderly man’s home at this point and commanded the attacker, “Put your arms out, put your legs out and stay right where you are, do not move!”
While Childress kept his gun trained on the man, Duncan called the police.
The former officer believes that if Duncan had not arrived when she did, their 90-year-old neighbor would be dead.
“You cannot protect everybody, police can’t do it, they’re good after the fact, but they’re no good to you when it happens generally,” said Childress. “They’re not going to be there so you need to be ready to protect yourself and others because what happened yesterday is a perfect example of how a citizen can protect other citizens,” he added.
Bob Owens, editor of Bearing Arms noted, “No other weapon system know[n] to man allows a small elderly woman to rescue an innocent victim from a younger, stronger, larger thug like a firearm.”
