Safyre Terry has known pain. This Christmas season, the brave survivor of a 2013 arson that claimed the lives of her father and three younger siblings is knowing joy as well.
Safyre, 8, lives with her aunt, Liz Dodler in the upstate New York state community of Schenectady. Dodler said that Safyre has been hoping for enough Christmas cards to, for once, fill their Christmas tree. A Facebook campaign was begun to fulfill the wish of this brave survivor, who suffered burns over 75 percent of her body in the fire and lost both her right hand and left foot due to complications caused by her burns.
Then Marine Cpl. Ted Kleniewski heard about Safyre’s bravery, as did others with the Albany-area Capital Region Toys for Tots Campaign.
Because Christmas is that time of year when giving from the heart knows no bounds, they surprised the girl at a hockey gameThursday night at the Times Union Center in Albany. Kleniewski and members of both teams gave her hugs and smiles. They also made sure she had gifts to bring her a bit of Christmas joy.
Across the Internet, Americans cheered Safyre and her new friends.
“This is amazing!!! God bless this team for making her feel so special. It’s so uplifting that so many people have come together for this beautiful. brave little girl in a time where everything seems to be so negative in the world right now. Simply beautiful. Happy holidays to all!!” wrote Stacy Witting.
”America is a giving nation…we love our little ones especially…they are such gifts themselves in our lives…God bless all these and others who have written cards, sent gifts, or like toys for tots have made this little girl’s Christmas so very special. God be with you all. sending lots of hugs and love to all for the wonderful work you all have done for this precious little girl. Merry Christmas darling,” wrote Sharon M. Clark.
