One California congresswoman is facing intraparty backlash after identifying what she sees as a clear and present threat within the Islamic faith. In a recent interview with Larry King, Democrat Rep. Loretta Sanchez addressed Barack Obama’s perceived reticence to accurately describe attacks by Muslim extremists.
While she was prepared to excuse the president’s “verbiage,” Sanchez expressed an urgent desire to see him treat Islamic terror as the significant issue it is.
“We know that there is a small group,” she said, “and we don’t know how big that is. It can be anywhere between 5 and 20 percent, from the people that I speak to, that Islam is their religion, and who have a desire for a caliphate, and to institute that in any way possible, and in particular go after what they consider Western norms – our way of life.”
She went on to describe these religious radicals as “not content enough to have their way of looking at the world,” explaining that they are “willing to go to extremes … and they do use terrorism.”
As for Obama, she said she wants him “to understand and go after this ISIS, ISIL, Daesh state that people are trying to form, because it’s going after us.”
Sanchez concluded her take on the topic by declaring that “we must” destroy the threat.
Her comments received some support from a number of Twitter users, including a few who predicted the very leftist blowback that soon followed.

In response to the criticism she received from Democrats and activist groups — including the Council on American-Islamic Relations — Sanchez released a statement.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez urged to apologize for comments about Muslims https://t.co/t80XKU4LDr — Jeremy B. White (@CapitolAlert) December 11, 2015
“I strongly support the Muslim community in America,” she clarified, “and believe that the overwhelming majority of Muslims do not support terrorism or ISIS. We must enlist the voices of the Muslim community in our fight against ISIS instead of alienating them through fear-mongering and discrimination.”
