In a recent interview with former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer discussed the press’ disproportionate coverage of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
Sununu interpreted the billionaire’s recent slip in multiple Iowa polls as evidence that Republicans now see the need to support a candidate “who can win and who can bring support along to win the Senate and hold the House.”
He went on to assert that the media are complicit in propping up Trump’s campaign.
“You and the press are so infatuated with Trump,” he insisted, prompting Hemmer to interrupt.
“I’m just trying to figure it out,” he said.
“No,” Sununu shot back, “you’re trying to promote it, Bill; and the voters see it . In Iowa, they see it. The Des Moines Register knows their state; they know how to poll them.”
Fox News joined the Register in confirming Sen. Ted Cruz has taken a statistical lead in that state ahead of its influential caucus. Sununu noted that voters in his state of New Hampshire — which holds the second caucus of the primary season — are beginning to see a similar trend away from front-runner Trump.
He cited Cruz’s rise, along with increased support for other Republicans including Marco Rubio and Chris Christie, as proof that voters want a nominee they can trust in a crisis.
“These candidates that are among the handful that Republicans recognize can make a good commander in chief,” he said, “are beginning to get traction — and Trump is starting to erode.”
At the very least, Hemmer conceded Sununu’s point that candidates other than Trump are beginning to get high-profile endorsements in early primary states.
“You’re right on that,” he told his guest.
Sununu concluded his argument by pointing out that Trump recently criticized Cruz for failing to make friends within the GOP, going on to ask how Trump would explain his own divisive rhetoric aimed at party leaders.
