Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson learned never to ask a child a question if you don’t want an honest answer.
Carson was speaking before a group of 500, including fifth-grade students, at Isaac Newton Christian Academy in Iowa on Thursday when he asked a question to illustrate a point about his own childhood, according to the Des Moines Register.
“As a fifth-grade student, I was a horrible student,” Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, said. “Anybody here in fifth grade? Who’s the worst student?”
Carson asked the question to open discussion about his own challenges in school, but had to do some political footwork when about a half dozen students pegged one student as the “worst student.” He redirected the conversation back to himself and challenges he faced growing up.
“Well, let me tell you, if you had asked that question in my classroom, there would have been no doubt,” he said, adding that he would have taken the title of “the dumbest person in the world” among his peers.
Reporter Timothy Meinch tweeted about the awkward situation, and the tweet went viral with more than 1,500 retweets.
“W/ crowd of 500 @Real Ben Carson just called out to 5th grade class: who’s dumbest kid in class? At least half dozen kids pointed to 1 student,” Meinch tweeted.
The student pointed out by classmates wasn’t upset over the situation. Instead, he laughed and said he would vote for Carson if he were old enough to cast a ballot. Carson campaign staffers also invited the elementary school student to meet Carson backstage after the rally. Carson told the boy he should become a neurosurgeon.
