Devastating are the days when a parent finds out a child may be suffering from a terminal illness. The word cancer can bring fear, panic, tears and thoughts of hopelessness. Sixty-year-old trucker Rodney Gibson had just found out over his cell phone that his daughter was dying of breast cancer.
Unaware that he was speeding, Gibson was pulled over by Indiana State Police Sgt. Todd Durnil.
Gibson, who wasa bit quick with the highway patrolman, was surprised to learn that Durnil noticed a guardian angel pin attached to Gibson’s visor and that it was identical to Durnil’s pin he also keeps in his cruiser.
Gibson made Durnil aware the pin was a gift from his ailing daughter, whose diagnosis Gibson had just learned. Gibson teared up as he conveyed the horror of the news he had just received at the time he was pulled over for speeding.
Instead of giving Gibson a ticket or even a warning, Durnil said he would let his church know of his family’s crisis and ask that the church pray for Gibson’s family.
Still a bit agitated, Gibson apologized to Durnil for acting out of sorts. Durnil then asked Gibson if there was anything else he could do for Gibson. Gibson sarcastically replied, “Do you know how to pray?”
Durnil reportedly told WRTV, “Here I was thinking this man needs prayer, and now he’s asking me for a prayer…The good Lord put us together for a purpose.”
Gibson described the prayer to the Herald-Times. “He reached for my hand, and this man sent up a prayer for my daughter and for my family that sent chills all over my body…I will never, ever forget this, nor will my family.”
The next day, Gibson called the highway patrol station to express his deep gratitude.
