In American politics there is a long tradition of kissing babies, but leave it to Donald Trump to take that tradition to the next step — and to get people talking about it, to boot.
The old tradition of kissing a baby is fraught with trouble, of course. Many times when the candidate picks up the child for a little smooch, the infant ends up crying and giving the candidate’s opponents the prime opportunity to mock.
But Trump had no problems with a toddler at a rally in Louisiana. A baby near the crowd line at a Baton Rouge Trump rally made the news when the real estate mogul took a quick moment not to kiss the baby but to sign a big “T” on the child’s right hand.

The baby, identified by CNN as little Curtis Jeffrey, was all dolled up for the rally, too.
The child had his blond hair in a Trump-styled faux-hawk, was wearing a red shirt covered by a blue vest which featured a patriotic cockade pinned to it. He also had a red, white and blue pacifier with a tiny photo of Trump on it in his mouth.
Needless to say, the child and his parents were thrilled to get some attention from “The Donald.”
As the photos below prove, our most recent presidents have had their problematic encounters with little ones.
Obviously Obama isn’t alone…
Then there is this photo which has been a favorite of Obama detractors everywhere:
