In what Chinese doctors are calling a modern-day “miracle,” a baby who was presumed dead is now living. The boy named “An An” was born prematurely, weighing just over 3 pounds. The baby was placed on life support in an incubator, and remained in the hospital for 23 days.
Two days after An An was taken home, the father noticed the baby was blue in color and returned the child to the hospital where it was determined the baby had suffered cardiac arrest. On February 4, Baby An An was pronounced dead. As is the custom, the hospital issued a death certificate to the father, placed the baby in a plastic bag, and transported the baby to the funeral home. The family was charged $152 for the cremation.
While the tiny infant was at the funeral home, his body was kept at 5 degrees Fahrenheit. On February 5, after spending 15 hours in below-freezing conditions, Baby An An’s body was being prepared for cremation. That’s when funeral home staff noticed something was wrong. “As soon as I pulled him out of the morgue, I thought I heard noises. When I pushed him to the crematory, the noises became louder. I opened the container and saw him moving, so I told the father the baby was still alive,” a worker told a local TV station.
According to Chloe Lyme of The Daily Mail, “Doctors at the Pan’an People’s Hospital in East China said this was their first encounter of such an incident. They could not explain what had happened, referring to it as a ‘miracle.’ Doctor Chen, head of pediatrics, said: ‘I have been a pediatrician for over 20 years. I’ve never seen anything like this.’” Baby An An is now in intensive care.
