A coal mine explosion killing at least 7 miners on July 8 was triggered by a coal and gas outburst, according to authorities via state-run media Xinhua. Outbursts are violent ejections of coal and gas from freshly exposed surfaces. Local officials said 39 miners escaped unhurt, but could not determine how many more remained trapped underground.
The explosion occurred at 6:45 a.m. at the XiangZhong Coal Mine Lianyuan City, Hunan Province. The mine has an annual output of 60,000 tons. It is owned by the local township, and is a legally licensed mine.
Thousands of lives are lost in mining accidents in China every year, many of which occur in illegally-run mines that have few safety regulations.
