We often see the homeless in big cities or in small towns. They are people who have lost their footing in society and need help.

A homeless man in Harbin, North East China, was the victim of a vicious crime, and the reason for it is just absurd.

On the night of March 11, a homeless man called Li Yongwu was sleeping in a narrow shelter by an ATM after a hard day. According to footage from a security camera, two guys entered the shelter around 9:30 p.m. After checking no one was watching, one of the men hit Li over the head with a beer bottle. He kept hitting Li’s head, and kicking his body. Then they got a plastic bag, put it over Li’s head, and continued to beat him.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw Li sitting on the ground with blood all over him, and even his blankets. He couldn’t stand up, and kept picking up waste paper to wipe away the blood, according to Heilongjiang News.

“Blood was dripping from his head. I went over to cover the wound, but soon the towels were soaked with blood!” recalled an officer surnamed Sun.  He dialed for an ambulance immediately.

The policemen found the two criminals outside a cinema, eating and drinking like nothing happened. When asked why they had done it, one of them said casually: “We don’t know him. We just got bored and want to have some fun.”

After being sent to the hospital, Li was found to have blood on the brain. He was transferred to intensive care for further treatment. However, he secretly left two days later, because he had no money to pay for the treatment.

The two guys were only sentenced to a 15-day administrative detention. The story went viral on Weibo , and many bloggers wanted to find Li to complete his treatment. They also questioned the lack of punishment. One said:

This is clearly a felony. Is the criminal law just a piece of paper or what?
