(Before It's News)

Facebook China

The first part of this article explains what a VPN is and how it can be used to access Facebook, YouTube and the other websites that are currently blocked in China.

The second part is a comparative review of VyprVPN, ExpressVPN and StrongVPN, which are in my opinion the three best VPN services for China. We’ll compare prices, functionality and the performance of the three VPNs.

What is a VPN and why do I need it in China?

As you probably already know, the internet doesn’t work like we wish it did in China and a large number of websites are blocked by the Great Firewall. Among the websites that you can’t access there are Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google+.

There are many other blocked websites, and depending on what you do, it will be virtually impossible for you to work in China without a VPN (Virtual Private Network) from China. The most striking case is probably given by Google.com, which often returns an error message when used from within the Middle Kingdom.

But there is still hope…

In order to solve this problem, you can install a VPN, which masks your I.P. address so that your laptop appears to be connected from the U.S. or Japan even if you are in China.

A VPN will allow you to bypass the firewall and access any website you want. But you need to choose wisely: even if there are tens of VPN services available, only a few works well in China. We have tested several of them for more than a year and today we’re going to review the two we like the most.

When shall I install the VPN?

We recommend to install your VPN before you travel to China as, if you wait till you arrive in China, installing the VPN app in your smartphone will be more difficult as Google Play is blocked too!

What are the best VPN for China and which should I choose?

In a nutshell, if you’re looking for a cheap, fast and reliable VPN, I suggest you to get StrongVPN.

However, if you don’t mind spending $1-2 USD more (per month) in order to get a VPN that has a more user-friendly setup and also works well on smartphones and tablets, then you should get VyprVPN.

Finally, if you are looking for a VPN with good performance, which is less popular in China (and therefore less susceptible to attacks like those that occurred in January 2015) and with servers in many countries, I recommend you use ExpressVPN.

Even though there are several free options such as Freegate (which is actually a proxy, not a VPN), they aren’t at all reliable and are extremely slow. The practical result is that by resorting to a free option, you won’t be able to do anything other than check your Facebook or Twitter feeds. Even posting a comment on Facebook will become an impossible mission.

  • I am currently using IronSocket as my VPN provider and I have been with them for several months. My last business trip to China was like a month ago and I therefore conclude that IronSocket works well especially in China. That is because I think they are Hong Kong based and that they are reliable and you do not have to worry about speed. You know, as far as Australia, they are popular over there so that means, if you live in the US like me, we can use them with same speed as with the Asians and Aussies who use them. I like using them esp with business, work, personal, and almost everything.

  • Yes facebook and google banned down there even most of the VPN sites also blocked. Expressvpn work fine but little expensive then others if you can afford then go with it other wise some more VPNs for China you can get from here bestvpnprovider.com but make sure first that VPN working in China.

  • Yeh, VPN is really great. But in cases when VPN is ineffective, I use 100% reliable proxies http://fineproxy.org/eng/ . The have never sold me short;)

  • All guys!
Since this 2015. Internet Censorship is the worst in human history.

Most older popular vpn providers are practically blocked in China. In addition of their popularity, they are blocked because of their technology: Shared IPs VPN Farm. It is very easy to be blocked. All the shared IPs are also known by their government.

I have found a new technology called Quasi-dedicated IP VPN invented by this new British Hong Kong company The Best VPN for China . The user’s IP is never known by 3rd party. Also, they will send you IP, password and encryption key over international SMS if you are blocked in that country like Iran, China, Russia etc. They even provide SOCKS SSH Tunnel, the hardest one to be blocked, in their cheapest plan. 2VPN.Co should be the Final Solution in bypassing internet. USA IP included.

kirasmart, web proxy is never secure if you alllow Java script etc to run. Beware.

  • Thanks for your recommendations! Yes, using VPN have become more difficult in the last couple of months in China. Many VPNs are getting blocked or disrupted in China. I found these VPN testing website quite useful: http://www.vpndada.com. They have a list of VPNs that still work in China: http://www.vpndada.com/best-vpns-for-china/
