Chinese do not trust their own food for three key reasons:
–> Sporadic enforcement of safety laws
–> Deceitful companies adding adulterants to Chinese food
–> Despoiled land
Chinese Do Not Trust Their Government
A big problem is that the Chinese realize that laws here are sporadically enforced at best. They are seen as a tool to be used at the discretion of the communists as opposed to a standard to govern behavior. This being the case, the Chinese do not believe that their government has their best interests in mind.
A glaring example was the melamine milk scandal of 2008. Although the scandal came to a head after the Olympics, problems with the tainted milk were reported as early as 2006.
This coincides with the time that American pets were dying from tainted Chinese pet food. The chemical adulterant melamine was responsible in both cases.
It has been shown that the communist party knew about the problem but chose to ignore it so as not to spoil the Olympics. To the Chinese this was a horrendous miscarriage of governance which only increased their distrust.
