Earthquake in the Philippines
Geofon reports a M 4.9 at 10 km, but below land
As all data are preliminary, we will have to wait until further data become available.
Phivolcs however is mentioning a Magnitude of 5.4 also at a depth of 10 km
Epicenter in Zamboanga Del Norte . Phivolcs expects an Intensity III which based on the number of readers online is understating the impact we think. Phivolcs reports a III intensity in Zamboanga City.
Epicenter luckily in a wilderness area close to Mount Malindang National Park.
Closest village : Dumingag, a city with 46000 inhabitants. Dumingaga is at only 10 km from the epicenter. Other town close to the epicenter : Sergio Osmena Sr., a city with 27500 inhabitants. This city is only 5 km from the epicenter. Epicenter location is provided by Phivolcs and may be the most accurate at this moment. There is always a serious error margin which can go up to 15 km.
Update 06:53 UTC : As the epicenter area is very mountainous, the shaking will be less than a similar earthquake in a flat river bed or flat area. On the other hand, mountainous areas are more dangerous for landslides.
Update 07:02 UTC : Phivolcs expects NO damage but does expect aftershocks. We think that based on the impact of people who felt this earthquake stating that it will not be damaging is a little too soon. We will need to wait a couple of hours more to be sure about this. Earthquake-report.com calls this earthquake still “Moderately Dangerous”
Update 07:12 UTC : After searching for the current weather in the area, we found out that the area has got some very heavy rains with flooding in some parts. The cocktail earthquake / heavy rain is resulting in a very dangerous situation.
Update 07:27 UTC : Local press is repeating the Phivolcs and USGS data without any additional information. At ER we believe that the shaking in both Dumingag and Sergio Osmena will be at least a IV or V (Phivolcs scale)
Update 07:30 UTC : What disturbs us a little is that we do not see readers online in Zamboanga del Norte. There can be various reasons for this, but mostly if power and telecommunications are still working, we see most of the people online in the epicenter area. Not in this case.
Update 07:37 UTC : In an updated bulletin Phivolcs is now reporting the quake to be a M5.2 at a depth of 20 km, far better numbers than they have reported earlier. Intensity III is reported in – Dumaguete City; Zamboanga City; Labason, Zamboanga del Norte. Intensity II – Dipolog City; Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte. No numbers however from the cities close to the epicenter.

Useful information to read this daily earthquake list
This earthquake list covers important earthquakes in the world.
If a more detailed page is present, the earthquake line will be linked to the detailed page.
For your comfort, we will provide in most cases a Google Satellite Map to give you an idea where the earthquake struck, which terrain it happened and if villages or cities are located in the immediate vicinity. The multi-source approach has been setup to compare values as seismology is not an exact science and needs a lot of calculations. The reference for the time zone is UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, also called GMT). Color explanation if we add some details above the list :
green color = NOT dangerous for damage or injuries
orange color = MODERATE risk for damage or injuries
red color = CONSIDERABLE risk for damage or injuries
QuakeSOS+ and QuakeSOS free are iPhone applications developed by Armand Vervaeck, the founder of Earthquake Report. The Application simplifies immediate group communication to friends and family members (with your exact GPS location) and is feeding the users with Earthquake Report news. The 0.99 US$ QuakeSOS+ version will support the activities of SOS Earthquakes.
