This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -

October 12, 2012 volcano activity

Again, most volcanoes are at “normal” levels of activity today.  Those include:  Fuego and Pacaya (Guatemala) (stations FG3 and PCG respectively. Both records suffer from telemetry interference. That’s not tremor!), San Miguel volcano in El Salvador (station VSM, also suffers from electronic interference, no tremor there either.) and San Cristobal, Concepcion and Telica (Nicaragua) (stations CRIN, CONN, and TELN respectively).
Volcanoes showing a little verve today include:  Popocatepetl (Mexico) where exhalations have increased in number and energy in the past 48 hours, Nevado Del Ruiz (Colombia) where a small earthquake swarm appears to be winding-down (station OLLZ). Actually, frequent small swarms like this have been the norm at Ruiz as it simmers from its recent eruptive period.  Aftershocks(?) from Monday’s M4.6 earthquake continue in the middle crust beneath Machin volcano (also in Colombia) (station CIMA).  And, not to be usurped, nearby Galeras volcano (station ANGV) is shuddering with small earthquakes (and rockfall(?) signals). Very small local earthquakes also affect Sotara volcano (Colombia) (station SOSO) and Tongariro volcano (New Zealand).  Volcanic tremor appears to be slowly strengthening within White Island volcano (New Zealand).
Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-rich plumes drifting from Popocatepetl (Mexico), Ambrym (Vanuatu), and Sakurajima (Japan)
