October 6 , 2012 volcano activity

Hello volcano lovers,
Just returned from the field.  It’s good to be home!
It doesn’t look as though I’ve missed much in the way of volcanic activity.  Activity has diminished greatly in the past month at Little Sitkin (Aleutian Arc), but small earthquakes (sometimes occurring in small bursts) continue at the volcano (station LSSA).
- The most interesting activity (to me at least!) has been on-going (although dwindling at Lassen) swarms of small earthquakes at Lassen and Mammoth Mountain volcanoes in California during the past month.  While seismicity is nowhere near a precursory level at either volcano, it does let us know that our volcanoes are alive and well!
- A low level earthquake swarm began overnight in the northeastern portion of Yellowstone Caldera. (station b208)
- Exhalations at Popocatepetl (Mexico) have become more frequent (and ash laden) since I last checked-in, averaging one and a half per hour per 24 hours.
- Volcano-seismicity seems at a slightly higher level at Pacaya (Guatemala) (station PCG) during my absence, sustained at nearby Santa Maria (station STG6), and at a diminished, but still high level at Fuego volcano (station FG3).
- Some sort of malware prevents me from checking-in on the volcanoes of El Salvador and Nicaragua today.
- Seismicity is low the active Colombian volcanoes we have been watching (Nevado Del Ruiz, Galeras, Sotara, Cumbal, and Machin).  Earthquake swarms have occurred in the past week at Cumbal and Galeras though.
- In New Zealand, volcanic tremor at White Island has strengthened (and become rhythmic/harmonic) since my last look about a month ago.
- Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-rich plumes eminating from Popocatepetl, Ambrym volcano (Vanuatu), Bagana (Bougainville Island), Krakatoa (Sunda Strait), and Nyiragongo (DRC).
