The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world
This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
December 10, 2012 volcano activity
KVERT reports that amplitude of volcanic tremor at Plosky Tolbachik continues to increase and that recent satellite thermal imagery shows a “hotspot” in the crater of Plosky Tolbachik proper.
The earthquake swarm at Coso Volcanic Field (CA) appears over. The swarm began around 27 November and included hundreds of located events ranging from less than M0.0 to M3.7. Earthquake depths ranged from below 10 km at the onset of unrest to less than 2 km the past few days.
Small earthquakes (including some deep low-frequency events) continue in the vicinity of Mammoth Mountain volcano (CA) (station MDP1).
Small to moderate gas and ash expulsions continue at an average rate of over two per hour at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico). The Popo seismogram shows elevated local seismicity.
Still unable to access seismographic data from the Guatemalan volcanoes, but an early morning Fuego volcanocam photo shows a lava flow descending to the base of the volcano.
Volcanic earthquake amplitudes increased briefly overnight at Concepcion volcano (Nicaragua) (station CONN).
A similar brief increase occurred at San Miguel volcano (El Salvador) (station VSM).
Volcanic tremor increased and was sustained for several hours overnight at Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) (station OLLZ). The increased may have been accompanied by low level eruption of ash. Pulses of stronger tremor and small earthquakes also occurred at Galeras volcano (station ANGV) during the same period.
Periods of stronger volcanic tremor and explosion earthquakes have returned at Reventador volcano (Ecuador) (station CONE).
Small local earthquakes are visible on seismograms recorded at Ruapehu and Tongariro volcanoes (New Zealand), and relatively strong, sustained tremor affects White Island volcano again today.
Satellite imagery was not updated at the time of this report.
