An initial group of 200 Chinese citizens will begin to arrive in British Columbia in coming weeks to work at new mines in the western Canadian province.
The full time workers – whose number could grow to as many as 2,000 eventually – follow $1.4 billion in Chinese funding for two of four coal projects in the northeast of the province announced in November.
The Vancouver Sun reports up to 800 Canadians would also be employed by the four coal mines, but according to one of the mine developers Canadian Dehua International Mines, Canadians “just don’t have the experience” to operate underground equipment safely and that “without the Chinese and the technology they’re bringing … these particular mines would not have been developed”: readmorehere
Yeah, that advanced Chinese technology. Oh, yeah, and the $2 per day they’ll be paid, too….
Already happening in Australia….not just in the mines.
Get rich quick, chinese speaking “entrepreneurs” ( read sharks) are bringing in youngsters on working holiday visas to work at other jobs with the shark providing “accommodation” for up to 20 in a single family 4 bedroom home. They get met at the airport , driven to and from work in a bus and completely controlled. Working holiday huh !
They “win” the contract in the first place by undercutting by nearly half the going rate.Takes the contractors agency fee off their hourly wage and its a good piece and then charges them for the bed they sleep in as well. What a business.
Why do we always get the rubbish from the governments sprouting about things not being developed etc without the tradeoffs of foreign workers (as they undercut the locals). Expediency is a great thing when you are in power.
Short term tradeoffs for long term problems.Good on you Australian government for allowing ordinary Aussies to be put out of work. God I hate the governments.
