The future of gambling

Everything evolves, but some things evolve faster than others. Nowhere is this more true than in the world of gambling where, like in many fields, the digital revolution has had a major impact.

So where there were once only land-based casinos now there are online ones too. And where once the online casino was effectively like playing a video game now it grows ever closer to being like the real thing.

There’s also no denying that it’s in the online arena that the most dramatic growth has occurred driven by a whole new audience who have been attracted to the ease and convenience of playing online compared with physically having to go to a casino.

The huge popularity of the online experience is further underlined by figures released by the UK Gambling Commission who found that between April 2015 and March 2016 it generated a gross yield of £4.46 billion – a staggering amount by anyone’s reckoning.

Obviously, given a figure like this, it’s a sector that has attracted a great deal of attention and many have tried to get their crystal balls out in order to predict what lies ahead for the major online casinos which is something major online operators such as 888casino do so well especially when pushing immersive slots and live casino within their brand.

To start with the technology, mobile gaming has become more and more popular through the use of both smartphones and tablets and this is very much a trend that is likely to continue and increase. The sheer convenience of this method of play means that it can be enjoyed everywhere from sitting on a train to a player’s front room at any time of day.

It can’t have escaped many people’s notice, either, that it looks like Virtual Reality is here to stay and this will undoubtedly be adopted by more and more online casino operators. The potential of this field is huge, especially in their drive to make online play as much like the live experience as possible.

As to what games are likely to be developed the standard favourites of blackjack, roulette and poker are likely to remain centre stage. However the players’ appetite for games that are quick to play is certain to be satisfied with faster and faster versions of these.

It’s an industry that is closely monitored so it’s probably fair to say that it will also become even more rigorous in its self-policing and regulating as well as continuing to support bodies like Gamble Aware which are designed to promote responsible and enjoyable gaming.

At the present time online casinos are by no means a global phenomenon and one of the most notable countries where they are not yet allowed is in America. So the world watches with interest to see what President-elect Donald Trump is going to do. Although a keen supporter of gaming himself, he is surrounding himself with some advisers who certainly are not. But everyone is agreed that for his proposed reforms in the country he’s going to need to raise large amounts of revenue and legalising online gambling would be an easy way to achieve this.

So there’s reasonable cause for optimism that the States will finally be climbing aboard the online gaming bandwagon too. But, as to where that will take us, only time will tell.
