We live in the age of science where men will soon be able to do all that he likes doing while machines will do all the boring stuff. But until we get there, science is concentrating on methods that will help us improve some other aspects of life. Every day, scientists discover something new connected to astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology. One of the recent discoveries made me think of picking a new hobby. Being a botanist my whole life, I have learned about a method that will help me with plant cultivation by making it not just easier but fun also. I have been experimenting my whole life and searching for different ways of cultivation and none made my day as this one. The method I am going to talk about is called aquaponics, and it also includes some of the other branches of agriculture – fish farming in particular.

Aquaponics 4 You
Fish farming, or, how some people would call it, aquaculture is one of the oldest jobs in the world. Nowadays it is not only a job but it is also a hobby and it brings joy to many peoples’ lives. It includes not only owning fish but also other beings that live in the water. On the other hand, we have something that people call hydroponics. This kind of agriculture is not practiced as the former one, but many people have tried it. It involves putting plants into water and growing them there with no soil at all. I have not tried this; therefore, I am not able to really explain what the process that makes the plants grow is. But scientists have proven and many of my fellow botanists have confirmed that it actually works. Now, as I said, science has this power of combination, without which there would not be any progress at all. Somebody (who is a scientist, I assume) has gotten the idea to combine aquaculture and hydroponics, and guess what? It turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to the world of agriculture. You probably doubt it, and do not trust me at all now, but I will try to explain how it works and make it as simple as possible.

Generally speaking, plants need to be fertilized in order to grow more. But when plants are put in water, there is no soil, and, therefore, there is nothing to be fertilized. However if we put fish in that same water where the plants are, we will be able to make the water dirtier than usual. This may seem confusing right now, but it is not, if you keep reading this text. Namely, that so called „dirt“ is actually the toxic by-product that fish leave behind. With special equipment, that water is transferred and cleaned and then returned back to the fish. But what cleans it, you might wonder? Plants.

Using the aquaponics system, plants gather these by-products and collect everything that they need in order to grow. Through the same system, the water returns back to the fish, where they will once again leave their by-products. The process is repeated constantly, and there lays the answer to the success that this method possesses. The method is proven to be very effective. The plants will grow bigger and faster. The percentage of time needed for the plants to grow was increased from fifty up to one hundred percent. The most important thing of all is that the same amount of space will give you twice as much plant, when compared to growing them on normal soil, under normal circumstances, fertilizing them with normal fertilizer.

If you are into gardening or into owning fish tanks, you should definitely try this. I didn’t only have more than satisfying results but I also had a lot of fun. The aquaponics system is not a machine or some big mechanism that you buy in a store, but rather a system that every person can build if he or she has the right tools for it. You will need a few special pieces of equipment only and everything else comes down to your imagination and creativity. Once again, even if you are not into this kind of stuff, I guarantee that it pays off in the end.
