You have probably seen those big shipping containers that are used to transport various goods across the seas. Now, these things are very useful solely based on this fact – without them, a lot of things would not be possible. Hell, most of the things that you order online have to go into one of these at some point. Just think about how much cool stuff you acquired by ordering on the internet. Well, if it weren’t for these containers, which are, by the way, designed to create perfect conditions for transporting all sorts of delicate things even over harsh sea storms, all that wouldn’t have been possible.

Now, the topic of this article will not be related to any marine activity. In fact, it will be connected to a, let’s call it, peculiar usage of shipping containers and that is, believe it or not, housing.

Yes, due to the fact that they are designed to create a safe environment, because sometimes people transport all sorts of expensive things and who do you think has to pay for something if it gets broken during transport? Well, there are two options. It will be either the company that manufactured the product, or the shipping company. Either way, both these companies will put a lot of effort in designing a state-of-the-art shipping container that will minimize the risk of something bad happening. So, if these contraptions are not used for overseas transport, why not use them to have a roof over your head. In order for you to get the gist of this topic better, here are some examples:

  • A Trailer

There is just enough space in there for you to install everything that you need for a certified camp trailer. With a few modifications, it can even become the best in the neighborhood. There are loads of these that you have probably seen when you went camping, but you didn’t even realize that there was something different about them. Try to Google this and see what happens.

  • An Additional Room

I came across this guy who had a house. He used a shipping container to create a summer kitchen and he did it by conjoining the container with his house, with a door of course. The only thing that he had to do next was add a little mortar around the edges and paint the container. I was amazed at how simple, efficient and effective it was.

  • A Bar

One year, when I was at the seaside, I saw a man who used an open shipping container, which was all fancy, nicely painted and designed, and he created a bar, right there on the beach. Due to the fact that a lot of people were standing right beside the bar, I presume that this man’s business was doing just fine.

  • Buildings

At this point, you must think I’m joking. But, imagine this. There are a specific number of containers on the ground. They are all the same in terms of size and shape. Imagine this as the ground floor of a building. Now, you just start putting another “floor” of containers above the ground floor. Repeat this process upwards and voila – you got yourself a building. These shipping containers are very heavy. If such a construction is strengthened with regular building construction mater, it would take an extreme earthquake to tear it down. You can find such constructions if you do a little digging on the net, when you have the time, of course.

As you may have concluded by now, people have come up with a lot of usages for these things. If you are looking to get yourself a home in the countryside, and you don’t have enough funding to do it traditionally, a shipping container might just be the thing you need, oddly enough. When you get into the matter a little bit more thoroughly, you will find out that these kinds of containers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and some are even designed to look cool, so that you don’t have to bother doing that yourself. This can be an excellent project for you and your family, so my question is – what are you waiting for?
