Cornyn Congratulates Pete Hoekstra on Winning Michigan GOP Primary
National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn made the following statement this evening regarding the Michigan Senate race and the nomination of Pete Hoekstra as our Republican candidate:
“This has been a spirited primary but I’m pleased to congratulate Pete Hoekstra on his victory tonight and look forward to supporting his campaign in the months ahead.
“This November, Michiganders will have a very clear choice between continuing down the path of more reckless government spending, higher taxes, failed job growth and a record debt, or electing a common-sense, fiscally-responsible and proven leader like Pete Hoekstra who will focus on jobs first and foremost.”
When she first ran for the U.S. Senate, Debbie Stabenow claimed to be a fiscal conservative who decried the rise in the national debt and claimed to support a balanced budget amendment. Stabenow pledged to reach across party lines and remain laser-focused on growing the Michigan economy.
Instead, under Senator Stabenow’s watch 12 years later, the federal debt has tripled, the Michigan unemployment rate has stood above 8 percent for almost four straight years, and Michigan’s junior Senator has been ranked as the most partisan member of the Senate by National Journal.
The contrast between then-candidate Stabenow’s rhetoric in 2000 versus her record in the Senate over the last 12 years is vast. And as voters in Michigan finally begin to focus on this race in the weeks ahead, Senator Stabenow will have a very difficult time defending and explaining it. She has repeatedly voted to max out the government credit card, and instead of helping to grow jobs in Michigan, she has repeatedly voted to grow government in Washington.
Republican nominee Pete Hoekstra offers a clear contrast as a proven, fiscally-responsible leader who will work across party lines and make the tough decisions to get our country back on track, instead of continuing to kick the can down the road as Senator Stabenow has done for the last 12 years.
