Cornyn Congratulates Pete Hoekstra on Winning Michigan GOP Primary

(Before It's News)

National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn made the following statement this evening regarding the Michigan Senate race and the nomination of Pete Hoekstra as our Republican candidate:

“This has been a spirited primary but I’m pleased to congratulate Pete Hoekstra on his victory tonight and look forward to supporting his campaign in the months ahead.

“This November, Michiganders will have a very clear choice between continuing down the path of more reckless government spending, higher taxes, failed job growth and a record debt, or electing a common-sense, fiscally-responsible and proven leader like Pete Hoekstra who will focus on jobs first and foremost.”

style="text-decoration: underline;">BACKGROUND….

When she first ran for the U.S. Senate, Debbie Stabenow claimed to be a fiscal conservative who decried the rise in the national debt and claimed to support a balanced budget amendment.  Stabenow pledged to reach across party lines and remain laser-focused on growing the Michigan economy.

Instead, under Senator Stabenow’s watch 12 years later, the federal debt has tripled, the Michigan unemployment rate has stood above 8 percent for almost four straight years, and Michigan’s junior Senator has been ranked as the most partisan member of the Senate by National Journal.

The contrast between then-candidate Stabenow’s rhetoric in 2000 versus her record in the Senate over the last 12 years is vast.  And as voters in Michigan finally begin to focus on this race in the weeks ahead, Senator Stabenow will have a very difficult time defending and explaining it.  She has repeatedly voted to max out the government credit card, and instead of helping to grow jobs in Michigan, she has repeatedly voted to grow government in Washington.

Republican nominee Pete Hoekstra offers a clear contrast as a proven, fiscally-responsible leader who will work across party lines and make the tough decisions to get our country back on track, instead of continuing to kick the can down the road as Senator Stabenow has done for the last 12 years.

style="text-decoration: underline;">ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND….

In 2010, Stabenow Was Ranked The Most Liberal Member Of The United States Senate

The Non-Partisan National Journal Ranked Debbie Stabenow As One Of The Most Liberal Senators In 2010. (Carrie Mihalcik, “Most Liberal Members Of Congress,” target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.nationaljournal.com/congress/most-liberal-members-of-congress-20110226" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">National Journal, 2/26/11)

Stabenow Votes The Party Line An Overwhelming Majority Of The Time

So Far In The 112th Congress, Stabenow Voted With Democrats 93 Percent Of The Time. (“The U.S. Congress Votes Database,” target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/112/senate/members/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.projects.washingtonpost.com, Accessed 7/1/12)

In 2011, Stabenow Supported Obama 94 Percent Of The Time. (Congressional Quarterly, target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.cq.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.cq.com, Accessed 5/1/12)

style="text-decoration: underline;">Stabenow Has Voted To Raise The Debt Ceiling At Least Seven Times

The National Debt Was Over $5.7 Trillion When Stabenow Took Office In January 2001. (U.S. Department Of Treasury, target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.treasurydirect.gov/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.treasurydirect.gov, Accessed 1/7/10)

August 1, 2012, The National Debt Was Over $15.9 Trillion. (U.S. Department Of Treasury, target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.treasurydirect.gov/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.treasurydirect.gov, Accessed 8/3/12)

In 2010, Stabenow Said The Debt Was Something “We Have To Deal With [In The] Long Term, But In My Opinion, We Won’t Be Able To Deal With While We Have 15 Million People Out Of Work.” “Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said the nation’s debt is something that ‘we have to deal with [in the] long term, but in my opinion, we won’t be able to deal with while we have 15 million people out of work.’” (Aaron Smith, “Stimulus: Economists Debate Its Success,” CNNMoney.com, 9/22/10)

But In 2004, Stabenow Called Raising The Debt Ceiling “Immoral” And “Fiscally Irresponsible.”

STABENOW: “To Make Matters Worse, The President Is Proposing Even More Debt Over The Next 10 Years. So We Have In Front Of Us An Effort To Raise The Debt Ceiling Instead Of Efforts To, In Fact, Lower The Debt.” (Sen. Stabenow, Congressional Record, S.11410, 11/17/04)

STABENOW: “This Is Immoral, I Believe. I Believe It Does Not Reflect Our Values As Americans. I Urge My Colleagues To Oppose This Legislation. You Know, It Is Kind Of Like A ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ Card For A Fiscally Irresponsible Situation Here, Led By Our Colleagues On The Other Side Of The Aisle And This Administration.” (Sen. Stabenow, Congressional Record, S.11410, 11/17/04)

In 2010, Stabenow Said The Health Care Reform Bill Would Reduce The National Debt & Create Michigan Jobs

Stabenow Said The Reconciliation Bill Is Going To “Save Money For Middle Class Families, Save Money For Seniors On Their Medicine, And It’s Going To Save Money On The National Debt.” MS. VAN SUSTEREN: “So what is your incentive to vote for the reconciliation bill, which is the House version, if you liked your own?” SEN. STABENOW: “Well, this is going to make a good bill better because we’re talking about provisions in there that are going save money for middle class families, save money for seniors on their medicine, and it’s going to save money on the national debt because it actually brings down the deficit more than the original bill.” (Fox News’ “On The Record,” 3/23/10)

Stabenow Said The Reconciliation Bill Cuts “The Deficit About $140 Billion In The First 10 Years And Over $1.2. Trillion In The Second Ten Years.” MS. VAN SUSTEREN: “– and they say that, you know, this is really a very expensive, very dangerous, and people worried about the deficit, and your numbers are so vastly different. Can you convince me your numbers are right? Are you cutting Medicare?” SEN. STABENOW: “Well, let me tell you first of all, overall, the Congressional Budget Office, which is extremely conservative, and 43 different economists have all agreed that we are cutting the deficit about $140 billion the first 10 years and over $1.2 trillion in the second 10 years.” (Fox News’ “On The Record,” 3/23/10)

target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRBKZPZCTgQ" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Stabenow Called Health Care Reform “A Jobs Bill.” STABENOW: “Frankly, it’s as much a jobs bill as anything else, certainly in my state, where we’re losing jobs because of rising health-care costs. So we’re anxious to get it done.” (MSNBC’s, “Countdown,” 3/16/10)

It’s About Saving Jobs.” STABENOW: “Nobody’s more frustrated than I am — highest unemployment rate in the country. I want us focused on jobs. And frankly, health-insurance reform is about jobs. It’s about saving jobs.” (MSNBC’s “The Ed Show,” 2/23/10)

In 2006, Stabenow Said It Was “Outrageous” How Money Was Being Spent In Washington

target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDxJ5lbRsl4" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Stabenow: “Let Me Just Say This: It’s Outrageous What’s Happening In Washington. When I Came Into The Senate, Back In 2001, We Had The Largest Surplus In The History Of The Country Left From The Clinton Administration. Now We Have The Largest Deficit In The History Of The Country. It’s Outrageous.” (Senator Debbie Stabenow, Debate, 10/15/06)

target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUG2PKsi2Gk" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Stabenow: “This Has Got To Stop. You Work Too Hard For That Money, And It’s Outrageous The Way That This Has Been Spent.” (Senator Debbie Stabenow, Debate, 10/15/06)

STABENOW: “My Parents Taught Me To Pay Your Bills.” STABENOW: “When I was growing up in Clare, my parents taught me to pay your bills.” (Andrew Chris, “Stark Differences Mark Abraham-Stabenow Race,” Lansing State Journal, 10/22/00)

STABENOW: “I’m All For Tax Cuts.” STABENOW: “Well, first, let me say, that, as a sponsor of Michigan’s largest property tax cut, I’m all for property tax cuts. I also — I’m all for tax cuts.” (CNN, 10/14/00)

Stabenow Said The Government Could “Eliminate The Debt In The Next Ten To Twelve Years.” STABENOW: “What — we can actually eliminate the debt in the next 10 to 12 years if we are focused on eliminating this debt and protecting Social Security and Medicare first.” (CNN, 10/14/00)

In 2000, Stabenow Repeatedly Pledged To Fight For A Balanced Budget

target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxH2kLqU-_Q" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">STABENOW: “First Of All, I Was Proud To Be One Of The Democrats That Crossed The Aisle To Help Balance The Budget For The First Time In 30 Years. This Is An Important Question, Though, And A Difference Between Spencer And I, Because I Think The Most Conservative Approach Is To Pay Our Bills, Pay Down Our Debt, Keep Interest Rates Down, Put More Money In Your Pocket, And Then Protect Social Security And Medicare First.” (Senator Debbie Stabenow, Debate, 10/22/00)
