South Dakota Rep. Kristi Noem got an earful when she talked with students in Pierre about new federal standards for school meals.

Noem spent more than an hour during two lunch periods Tuesday talking to students at Georgia Morse Middle School.

Noem says that the most criticized part of the standards seems to be a strict limit on calories. She says that has resulted in smaller portions and hungrier students. Some students say they don't like the lunches.

Pierre School District officials say they have heard complaints from parents. Food services supervisor Darrel Davis says the new standards have forced the district to eliminate a salad bar because some salads and puddings exceeded calorie limits.

Davis says many students complain they are not getting enough to eat.
