“I like PBS … I love Big Bird,” he said, “but I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.” If you got a chance to catch last week’s presidential debate, then you more than likely heard Mitt Romney state the quote above.. It was one of the most awkward moments of the debate. Not to mention that the debate moderator, Jim Lehrer, works for PBS. Can you imagine the screams of kids around the country when they heard this news? 8-year-old Cecelia Crawford actually wrote a letter to the Romney campaigned and pleaded for her “favorite show on earth” to not get cancelled. What did Big Bird have to say about it? Last Thursday, he tweeted, “My bed time is usually 7:45, but I was really tired yesterday and fell asleep at 7! Did I miss anything last night?” But Big Bird did join Seth Meyers on this weekend’s SNL parody news report. Apparently, Big Bird has been mentioned for a while in Romney’s campaign though. In New Hampshire, he stated, “I’m not going to make Big Bird go away, but there’s going to be advertising on PBS if I’m president” in a less threatening tone in December of 2011. SMH…who knew Big Bird would be such a focal point of political debate???
